In honor of the Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik

News |

Dubrovnik will forever be known in the world for the 9th Chess Olympiad that was held in the city from August 19 to September 11, 1950.

It was the first major sporting event in Croatia, then part of the former Republic of Yugoslavia, in which Yugoslavia, in the competition of 16 countries, without the then Eastern Bloc countries, won first place.

This way Dubrovnik became the first Croatian Olympic city and for the occasion, a special design of chess pieces called “Dubrovnik” was made, pieces that the legendary world champion Bobby Fischer called the best chess pieces on which he has ever played.

Along the lines of this design, the Croatian Chess Federation has decided to create special chess pieces that will be used at the European Youth Championship in Porec, which is another major contribution to the memory of this historical chess event in Croatia.
